This tutorial will show you how to do a sidebar image like this :
1. Edit the picture that you want to use using psd's, etc
2. Open a new document using 250x250. make sure your background color is transparent. It should look like this:
3. Fill the new document using the color of your theme or any color!
4. On your picture, take your eraser tool and erase the random background out.
5. Now copy and paste your picture into your other document. You can also resize it so it fits.
6. Duplicate your picture. If you don't know how, here it is:
7. Make sure the second one of your 2 layers is selected.
8. Go to filter --> blur --> motion blur
8. Now you have to put the distance around 20-25 or whatever you want to.
(You don't need to do the next steps but it would make it look softer and nicer)
9. Click the first layer selection
10. Make sure the color of your background is selected.
Go to layer --> new fill layer --> gradient
11. Click ok and the 2 little boxes that pop up
